AirAsia Discount Up to 50% With Supersize Baggage Policy
An AirAsia discount for guests is available as the leading low cost carrier implements a new baggage policy that is very much simpler and more convenient. Dubbed “Supersize”, AirAsia guests can now choose from three tiers of baggage sizes when purchasing their flight seats online. For domestic flights, guests can choose from Supersize Regular for up to 15kg of baggage and pay a nominal sum of RM5, Supersize Medium for up to 20kg at RM43 or Supersize Large for up to 25kg at only RM80. For international sectors, charges are RM5, RM55 and RM105 for Supersize Regular, Supersize Medium and Supersize Large respectively. “With the implementation of the AirAsia discount Supersize, guests now no longer have to pay the checked-in baggage handling fee of RM5 per piece of luggage. This means guests who opt for Supersize Regular can check-in more than 1 piece of luggage but only pay RM5 as long as the total weight does not exceed 15kg,” explained Kathleen Tan, AirAsia Regional Head of Commercial.
“Previously, guests who booked online had to pay RM5 for every piece of checked-in luggage, subject to the 15kg allocation. They had to pay double the charges i.e. RM10 per piece over the counter if they did not book online. This is on top of excess baggage charges for checked-in baggage that is more than 15kg,” added Tan. A similar baggage policy has previously been implemented for AirAsia X flights with slight rate revisions for its Supersize implementation. Effective 13 January 2009, Supersize Regular (up to 15kg) for AirAsia X remains at the previous rate of RM20, while Supersize Medium (up to 20kg) and Supersize Large (up to 25kg) now cost RM5 more than previously. Supersize Medium for AirAsia X now costs RM55 (RM50 previously) while Supersize Large is RM105 (RM100 previously).Over-the-counter excess baggage fees however remain at RM15 per kg for AirAsia domestic flights and RM20 per kg for AirAsia international sectors. There is also no change to AirAsia X excess baggage charges of RM20 per kg on all its international sectors, except for London Stansted that charges RM50 per kg. The AirAsia discount Supersize is only available for online booking via AirAsia.com from 13 January 2009 onwards. Guests booking via agents or other channels would not be able to enjoy this service. Guests who booked their seats before this date are still subject to checked-in baggage handling fees and the prevailing over-the-counter excess baggage charges. Drawing an example from Supersize Large for an AirAsia domestic flight (up to 25kg at RM80) and considering RM5 of the amount is for the first 15kg, Tan pointed out that guests end up paying only RM7.50 for every kg beyond the first 15kg. This represents an AirAsia discount of 50% saving as compared to over-the-counter excess baggage fee of RM15 per kg for domestic sectors. For Supersize Medium (20kg at RM43), the guest only pays RM7.60 for every kg beyond the first 15kg. “With Supersize, guests only pay for what they use. If you only carry a hand luggage not exceeding 7kg onboard, you do not have to pay a single sen for baggage. However, on return you may opt for one of the Supersize packages if you intend to shop at your destination. Likewise, guests traveling during festive periods tend to carry a lot of extra luggage and with Supersize, you will save a lot. This is what we call real savings via an AirAsia discount; there are absolutely no hidden charges,” said Tan. “AirAsia would like to pass on and share these savings with our guests. However the slight increase in baggage charges for AirAsia X routes is inevitable in view of higher costs in operating these long-haul sectors,” Tan pointed out. She also noted that AirAsia was the first airline in the world to totally abolish fuel surcharge last November.(Courtesy of Airasia) SUPERSIZE BAGGAGE FEES (Online Booking) MALAYSIA Supersize Baggage Fee Effective 13th January 2009 Per guest per flight sector | Supersize Baggage | Maximum Weight | Domestic AK Flights to/ from Malaysia | International AK Flights to/ from Malaysia | Hand Luggage Only | 7kg | FREE | FREE | Supersize Regular | 15kg | RM5 | RM5 | Supersize Medium | 20kg | RM43 | RM55 | Supersize Large | Up to 25kg | RM80 | RM105 |
