Malaysia London Flights Take Off Via AirAsia
AirAsia’s first Malaysia London flights took off today from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal at Kuala Lumpur at 9.00 am. A send-off celebration was held at the terminal to mark the historic voyage for AirAsia and its long haul affiliate AirAsia X that operates the sector. Joining AirAsia X Chairman Dato’ Seri Kalimullah Masheerul Hassan and CEO Azran Osman-Rani on the historic inaugural flight were the Secretary General of the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) HE Dr Surin Pitsuwan and the British High Commissioner to Malaysia HE Boyd McCleary. The Airbus A340-300 flight flew off with a full load 286 guests onboard, including 30 in XL seats. AirAsia’s first flight to London had created frenzy amongst travelers from both sides of the world when it opened for sale in November 2008. Promotional seats that went for RM499 / GBP99 per way during the route launch were snapped up within 48 hours.
Amongst the first passengers who bought the lowest-fare seats is Ms Jagjit Kaur, 28, who would be flying to London on the first flight with her parents Mr Laban Singh and Ms Bhagwan Kaur, and younger brother Jasmair Singh. The AirAsia X inaugural flight is truly a historic one for Ms Sarah Brook, 29, and her fiancé Mr Simon Mahood, 28, as they were en route back to London for their wedding. They had earlier taken an AirAsia flight from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur, before departing for London on the inaugural flight. The Malaysia London flights via Kuala Lumpur has received an overwhelming response from travellers between Australia and Europe. Dubbed the ‘Kangaroo Route’, AirAsia X provides a very affordable connectivity from London to Australian cities of Perth, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, with Kuala Lumpur as the hub. Among Australia-originating guests on the inaugural flight are Mr Rodrick Williams who had flown in from Melbourne and Fremantle-based Mr Eugene O’Connor, 29, who had earlier taken an AirAsia X flight from Perth. In support of sustainable development and bridging communities through low fares, AirAsia X has partnered the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia – UKM) through its UKM-Global Student Mobility Partnerships student exchange programme. At least 10 students from the UK have signed up for the programme and will fly AirAsia X to Kuala Lumpur in June 2009.
