Malaysia Today

The most controversial website in Malaysia is Malaysia Today. It is popular for calling attention to the flaws in the governing political party as well as the opposition political parties.

Raja Petra Kamarudin started it as a blog in August 2004 and it quickly became popular receiving approximately 100 million hits and claiming that it has a audience greater than the New Straits Times, the largest English day-to-day newspaper in Malaysia.

Some of the major media in Malaysia has reported that Malaysia Today gets 1.5 million hits every day, and is one of the top political websites in Malaysia

Due to the political nature of the website the government has blocked the site several times and Raja Petra has been questioned and detained by the police on more than one occasion. He has recently been charged with sedition by the Malaysian government because of material that was published on the site. Singapore is currently the host for the website.

In September 2008, Raja Petra Kamarudin was formally arrested and charged under Malaysia's harsh internal security laws. He was jailed for up to 2 years and held in a maximum security prison on the basis of a detention order initiated by Malaysia's home minister, Syed Hamid Albar. He could in fact be held in prison indefinitely without trial since the detention order can be renewed.

As of the 2nd week of November 2008 Raja Petra Kamarudin was released by the High Court of Malaysia, stating that the government had overstepped its authority in arresting him.

The government had accused Raja Petra through of endangering national security and being a threat to Islam by prompting racial stress in Malaysia, which is an ethnically diverse country.

In the recent past there has been a public outcry in Malaysia for greater rights and civil liberties, however, the government continues to suppress the idea of freedom of speech and a free press in their attempt to retain popular confidence among Malaysians.

On the one hand, the government claims to have a hands-off approach to the internet in order to increase technological growth and internet use in the country. Yet, the content on the internet, which might be embarrassing or sensitive to those in power, is still deemed to be unacceptable.
