Volunteers for Sustainable Tourism Programs In Malaysia

Volunteers for sustainable tourism brings greater depth to one’s holiday experience in a particular country as it allows one to explore a foreign land and its cultures while making a meaningful contribution to the local environment or community.

There are a few volunteer programs in Malaysia that are well-organized and at the same time offer a unique cultural, social and environmental experience to its participants.

No matter what you choose, volunteering will prove a fulfilling experience especially when the project is something that you are very passionate about.

1. Volunteers for Juara Turtle Project

TAT (Tengku Arif Temenggong) Turtle Sanctuary is a turtle hatchery facility located in Kampung Juara, on the eastern coast of Tioman Island, Malaysia. It is operated and maintained by a small group of dedicated individuals with the help of local and international volunteers. The Juara hatchery was established in 2006 when Juara’s Riverview Resort adopted a local government-run turtle hatchery at the end of its five year contract. Over the last few years the project has grown steadily as a “minimal interference, strictly conservation-aimed” hatchery.

The facility looks forward to and will appreciate working with anyone who supports similar perspectives on conservation efforts, through funding, environmental education, or physical participation. For more information, please go to http://www.juaraturtleproject.com/.

2. Volunteers for Animals Project at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is set in a 280 acre forest reserve in the district of Penampang, just 15 km south west of Sabah's capital, Kota Kinabalu. It is run by the Sabah Wildlife Department and has been developed to educate and foster awareness about conservation issues.

At the wildlife park, the volunteers’ role will be to a assist keepers in their daily duties in looking after the animals. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about animal care across a variety of species. They will also have hands on contact with some of the animals that have been hand reared. 3. Volunteers for Indigenous Communities on Conservation Projects in Borneo

The program is located in Sabah, on the Kinabatangan River which boasts some of the best wildlife in South East Asia. This initiative aims to provide sustainable alternative sources of income for local indigenous people by increasing eco-tourism opportunities. As well as this, volunteers will help to save and restore habitats for rare and threatened wildlife species, such as orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys, elephants and otters, amongst others. Volunteers will help sustain ongoing habitat restoration work, such as forest habitat restoration and wetland lake restoration. These efforts provide critical habitats for food, movement and nesting structures, and link forest and wetland waterways.
